Dear Hawk Girl…

August 29, 2009

Wow…so this week has been weird huh?
It’s been killing me that things have changed suddenly here at the Watchtower… there’s nothing worse than have an awkward work environment.

We both know why, maybe it’s an embarrassment thing, or an ego thing, but I guess we just been trying to ignore the obvious.
Truth be told, I miss you. A lot! I miss my friend first and foremost.

Even Super Girl and Black Canary have been asking me what’s happened. So it’s become something that people have noticed – which I know you hate, because you just want to go about your daily tasks of helping the humans on earth, and not draw dagger stares from those in the league who like to toot my horn.

I blame myself for this situation.

Gotta be honest here Hawks, I really think I messed things up for myself, and I’m worried it’s beyond repair.

I have issues around women…especially those who…ok well; let me rather start at the beginning.

I’ll never forget that day some 2 and half years ago…we were both fairly new to the Justice League, and you were sent down from your planet for one of Batman’s dreaded debriefings (sometimes they come across as damn sales meetings). I was asked to sit in to see how it all works…and there I noticed you sitting next to Power Girl… you were wearing an animal print outfit and a yellow utility belt, that’s when everything became slow motion and I just melted.

Then you went back to Thanagar. And I was left to go on with my life…I didn’t think we’d ever work an assignment together.

The boys here at the Watchtower mocked me about my crush on you…but it was never an issue really…how could it be right? Id only seen you once.

Over the years we became interplanetary email buddies, you on Thanagar and me here on Earth.

Then I overheard Batman and the Man of Steel talking about how your powers would be a great asset here on Earth.

You and I both bonded over this news. I felt an excitement in me, (which can be embarrassing considering my limbs can stretch at will!)

The thought of seeing you every day and getting to know you on another level, man alive…the Gods were on my side for a change.

I remember the “seek and observe” assignment we were both given back in April, you remember when we thought Animal Man had switched sides and was working for the Injustice League??
Animal+Man+colored
Man the guy may have issues, but he’s on our side. And I know you had a thing with him back in the day…so I ended up being jealous, and couldn’t wait to expose him as a traitor. ( but deep down it was about making you happy that weekend)

When you finally got reassigned to Earth a few months ago, I was like a schoolboy again (see I previously had a thing for Catwoman, and while nothing happened, it was so draining, that I had become a bit cold to the *ahem* opposite sex).

We got along so well you and I.
Our private jokes about the other superheroes who thought their powers were better than ours…good times!

I knew something was changing however.
I tried to avoid it, nay stop it… I really did.
There was no denying it, and despite warnings (some out of concern, others out of jealousy), I began to fall for you.

I didn’t want that to happen, because hey, lets be honest here, Guys like me…they don’t get girls like you.

Last week of course we had our Super Villain seminar that The Flash put together in an attempt to get us all on the same page – Lord knows crime fighting has changed.

We spent so much time together, there was a definite awkwardness I could feel coming from you… I knew something was up. But then on Day 2 of the Super Villain seminar, all my fears were realized. When you were so close to me, and I looked into your eyes, I knew that was it for me.

That was the exact moment I fell in love with you.

When I watched the surveillance video of the seminar, I realized how absolutely perfect you were….and how flawed I was. Confidence plummeted. (yes despite you saying you can’t fit into your cape and tights some days, to me, I had never seen someone so beautiful).

Then earlier this week I heard you were going to see Animal Man again at the annual Superhero Convention…I panicked, what if he was setting you up…No…this couldn’t happen. You deserved better!

I tried to warn you against him and ended up coming across as a jealous A-hole. Then in a passing comment you said something which shattered me completely – you were seeing Aquaman.
Aquaman
The world stopped…I didn’t even notice the attack by Starro on the Australian Reef…I was numb.

Being the guy who is always funny and keeping others entertained comes with a price behind the scenes. There is no place for personal hurt.

Plus as you know Wonder Women was leaving the Justice League this week, and she’s one of my dearest friends. I felt like I was about to lose everything in the space of a few days. I began to swing emotionally.

I closed up….and I’m hurting so badly because of my own silly heart and I know it’s not because of you’re actiona, you’re just living your life , and I don’t begrudge you at all…Aquaman is an awesome guy, and if he makes you happy… I really am happy for you. I did have a feeling your mates Red Tornado & Red Tornado II were trying to set you up with someone…but I didn’t think it would be Aquaman!

Deep down I know all the nice moments we shared, the little things like the ice coffee while we checked out super villains personal files, the stealing of Martian Manhunter’s candy coated sweets when we had a craving, and the gifts we gave each other, they were all just done because you are a genuinely nice person.

I’d never had that sorta attention before… I mistook it as the “signs” Green Arrow always talks about which women supposedly give us guys.

Hawkgirl – these last few days we have hardly said a word to each other and it’s killed me. You don’t visit, you don’t look me in the eye, and you don’t email me random things like we ALWAYS do…

So I’m writing you this letter…I don’t even know if you will read it…

What I do know is you don’t know how to react to me, and I don’t know what else to do.

All I can say is that I will lock away my feelings for you, I just want to be your friend again, your happiness is so important to me, and I don’t want to be the cause of any sorta tension here at the Watchtower, Bats would have my ass if I missed another invasion.

If you read this…and you want to talk. Please message me. You know where to find me. If you don’t…I guess I’ll just go on hiding in the men’s locker room every time you come past.

I joke, I joke.
The fate of the known world depends on us.

Yours always

My Top 60 Soundtracks(Part 4)

August 21, 2009

Another day, another installment of my countdown…

30. Threesome
threesome_f
– This really feels like its ranked for too high considering the quality of some of the albums that came before it on my list, but for some reason, it really feels right being in the Top 30. Weird, just like the movie.
Fave tracks: “Bizarre Love Triangle” – New order, “Dancing Barefoot” – U2 & “That Was The Day” – The The

29. Fast Time At Ridgemont High
Front
– Iconic movie, if somewhat dated… the soundtrack really only works for die-hard fans of the movie in my opinion. Which works just fine for me.
Fave Tracks: “Somebody’s Baby” – Jackson Browne, “Love Rules” – Don Henley & “fast Times at Ridgemont High” – Sammy Hagar.

28. Armageddon
OST_Armageddon
-Sure, the movie is an over the top Popcorn extravaganza like only Jerry Bruckheimer can give us…but it works. And Bruce Willis save the world.
Fave tracks: All the Aerosmith tracks (yes including “I dont wanna miss a thing”, solely because it gave them their only #1), and most of the others too (cop out i know!)

27. Forrest Gump
FG
– Can’t say I’m a Tom Hanks fan, but the man makes AMAZING movies. This 2 disc set has an endless array of out and out classics.
Fave Tracks: pick one – Elvis, Wilson Pickett, Joan Baez, Creedance, Beach Boys, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, The Byrds, Randy Newman, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Fleetwood Mac….(see neither can I)

26. Velvet Goldmine

Fave Tracks: “20th Century Boy” – Placebo, “We Are The Boys” – Pulp & “Diamond Meadows” – T.Rex

25. Almost Famous
almost_famous
– Great selection of classics here…and is makes the list on the strength of that alone. I cannot tell a lie here… I havent seen this movie in its entirety. It would probably list higher if I did.
Fave Tracks: “Simple Man” – Lynyrd Skynyrd, “One Way Out” Allman Brothers, “Tiny Dancer” – Elton John

24. Dead man Walking
deadman
– Anyone who ever doubts the mad skills of Sean Penn needs to see this movie. It was the soundtrack that made me realize how much of a genius Eddie Vedder is (although I still HATE Pearl Jam…weird)
Fave Tracks: “The Face of Love” – Eddie Vedder & Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, “Dead Man Walkin’ – Bruce Springsteen, “In Your Mind” – Johnny Cash.

23. The Dark Knight
darkknight1
– The only out and out Score on my countdown (Gladiator & Lord Of The Rings just missed the cut). Superb and effective. Got robbed of an Oscar. (Or as a friend of mine would say, “I Still can’t believe Dark Knight didnt win Best Film”)
Fave Tracks: “Why So Serious” – by composers Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard chills!

22. Tank Girl
tankgirl

Fave Tracks: “Aurora” – Veruca Salt, “Army of Me” – Bjork, “Roads”- Portishead & “Shove” – L7

21. Stranger Than Fiction
stranger
– This for me is Will Ferrel’s finest performance as an actor (even though Anchorman was the shiz), and the movie is perfectly compliments by a phenomenal soundtrack.
Fave Tracks: “The Book I Write” – Spoon, “That’s Entertainment” – The Jam & “Gone Missing” – Maximo Park

Top 20 soon! Stay Tuned!

My Top 60 Soundtracks

August 14, 2009

Since my early days of buying music (cassettes & LPs), one of favourite treats, was always finding a soundtrack of movies I loved.

Of course, nowadays, soundtracks are a dime a dozen, and everyone tries to cash in on it as part of the merchandising.

And I, like any good consumer sheep, oblige by buying every soundtrack I come across…shamelessly, even before seeing the movie or knowing what’s on the album.

Which means… I own a helluva lotta cr@p.
That being said… I own a truckload of cool stuff too. Which brings me to the reason for this blog.

I’ve always had a general idea of my 50 favourite movie soundtracks…but I’ve never actually taken to time to put that list to paper (MS word counts right?).

So now, I proudly bring to you my countdown of my Top 50 soundtracks. (The only rule to my list is I have to actually own the album, so if there may be the occasional title not on this list).

But why have a Top 50….when we can do a Top 60! (yes, there were 10 others I just had to include).

60. Airheads
200px-AirheadsSoundtrack
My mom bought me this album straight after we saw the movie because I loved the it so much…I didn’t realize it would give me a taste for the heavier stuff.
Fave Tracks: “Born To Raise Hell”- Ice T, Whitfield Crane & Lemmy, and “Feed The Gods” – White Zombie

59. Coyote Ugly
6a00c2251d2ae5604a00d09e6c3952be2b-500pi
This would be higher up on my list if it didn’t become so commercial. A fun movie, with a fun soundtrack. Simple equation really.
Fave Track: “Unbelievable” EMF (laugh and I’ll smack you….or at least hire someone to)

58. Disturbing Behavior

generazioneperfetta
Picked this up when I was in New York, oh so many years ago…during the rebirth of Teen horror movies. Great tracklist!
Fave Tracks: “Monsterside” – Addict, “Got You Where I Want You” – The Flys, “Every Little Thing Counts” – Janus Stark

57. Daredevil
l10727
Another album that should have been higher – if certain songs didn’t fall victim to the dreaded overexposure curse. Huge modern rock selection.
Fave Tracks: “The Man Without Fear” – Drowning Pool with Rob Zombie….and yes…the Evanescence tracks.

56. The Faculty
51yvbjlejnl_ss500_
The first of many entries from Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino. A moody effective rock album that suits the movie to a T.
Fave Tracks: “Resuscitation” – Sheryl Crow, “Maybe Someday” – Flick, “Medication” – Garbage

55. Blue Crush
cover
There is just a coolness about this movie and the music. Almost every track takes me away an puts me in chilled little spot away from the world.
Fave Tracks: Nikka Costa – “Everybody Got Their something” & the song that introduced me to Zero 7 – “Destiny”

54. Batman Forever
batman_forever
Forget about the up and down spiral of the Batman movies of the 90s, they sure did produce some awesome soundtracks.
Fave Tracks: “Kiss From a Rose” – Seal (admit it you liked it too), “One Time Too Many” – PJ Harvey & “Hold me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” – U2.

53. Angus
angus
Man this is a movie that needs to be on DVD. Angus gave fat kids everyone hope of scoring the girl.
Fave Tracks: “JAR” – Green Day, “Jack Names The Planets” – Ash, “Am I Wrong” – Love Split Love

52. Blaze of Glory (Young Guns II) Bon Jovi
611-1
Sure, its basically a Bon Jovi album, but come on….how perfect does the music work in the movie? I could listen to this all day because it reminds of scenes in the movie.
Fave Tracks: Blaze of Glory, Billy Get Your Gun.

51. Jerry Maguire
Jerry Maguire - Soundtrack
I like most of these songs individually, but for some reason the running order on this album annoys me, and that’s the only reason its not higher up.
Fave Tracks: “Secret Garden” – Bruce Springsteen, “World on a String” – Neil Young

That my first 10!
Stay tuned for Part 2 coming soon….
